STAR Performance Results

The annual results from STAR have been tracked since 1985 using both ten and twenty share model portfolios. Both growth and income portfolios employ the same general selection criteria except that the income selections are required to exceed a gross dividend yield hurdle equivalent to the median yield on the underlying universe of 300 plus shares analysed each month.
Detailed monthly records have been kept on these portfolios since the STAR bulletins were first published as the High Income Share Selector in 1993.You may check out the long term performance of the ten share growth portfolios by scrolling down this page.
If you would like to look through the detailed monthly records of the larger twenty share growth portfolio over the past six years please go to the Star Monthly Records.
To check out each year's nominal transactions for the 20 share Growth portfolio please go to Star Transaction Records.
The Comparative monthly performance results of the 20 Share Growth and Income portfolios since January 1999 are set out in the Long Term Performance Chart and Table.

The table, above, records the annual results from each year's Top Ten Growth selections between the end of 1985 and 2009. For the years to end 1994 the results are those obtained from simulated selections derived from forecast earnings data produced each month in stockbrokers James Capel's Red Book. As from 1995 the results are taken directly from the printed monthly STAR bulletins.
The long term record indicates that the STAR selection methods have outperformed the All Share Index more than tenfold over the 22 year period.
In the fifteen year period since the STAR bulletins have been published the methods have outperformed the All Share Index significantly. Between January 1995 and April 2009 the FTSE All Share Index has risen by 23% whereas the STAR Growth selections have risen by more than 150%, excluding dividends and all transaction costs.
